Highways are often dangerous places, especially if there are reckless drivers on the road. One of the most common types of reckless maneuvers is an unsafe lane change or passing of another vehicle. Police say this may have been a key factor in a recent fatal Florida collision.
Several vehicles were sharing a roadway when a tragedy occurred. A 20-year-old man who was driving a pickup truck attempted to pass the vehicle that was in front of him on the road. The pickup driver was in the westbound lane at the time but traveled into the eastbound lane to make the pass.
A 33-year-old man on a motorcycle was traveling in the eastbound lane. While the two drivers swerved to try to avoid collision, it did not help. The pickup driver hit the motorcyclist, who was soon after transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Sadly, he did not survive. The collision occurred at approximately 7 a.m. on a Saturday, and the motorcyclist’s death was listed as 5:10 p.m. that same day.
It is not the first fatal Florida collision that has occurred this year, nor is it likely to be the last. In many cases, immediate family members of deceased accident victims file wrongful death claims in civil court. As plaintiffs, they are tasked with providing evidence in court to show that another driver’s negligence was directly responsible for the death of their loved one. The court may order a defendant to pay compensation for damages, which often include emotional trauma, medical bills, loss of consortium and loss of potential future income.
Client Testimonials
A Florida employee was recently working on a water main line break when disaster struck. Maintenance work like this is often high risk for injury, especially if there are electrical wires nearby as there was in this case. Firefighters who responded to the accident scene may not have been prepared for what happened next.
The worker was underneath a sidewalk while repairing the water main leak. The sidewalk above him suddenly collapsed, entrapping him under the rubble. Three firefighters were among responders who rushed to the scene to render aid. However, because of a nearby electrical transformer, the entire area became electrically charged.
All three firefighters suffered severe injuries when they were shocked as they entered the area to help the trapped worker. Sadly, the environmental service worker did not survive his injuries in the collapse. The injured firefighters were transported to a hospital for emergency care. No additional information was provided as to what exactly caused the sidewalk to collapse while the worker was repairing the pipe break.
When a Florida worker suffers injury on the job, he or she can file a workers’ compensation claim to collect benefits. In the case of a fatal workplace accident, a spouse or other immediate family member may want to speak with an experienced attorney because they may be able to obtain benefits through the program as well. A worker who survives his or her injuries may collect benefits to help pay medical bills and replace lost wages during recovery.
