Fatal auto accident still under investigation in Florida

A passenger in someone’s vehicle understands that there is a certain amount of risk involved. The driver, or course, is responsible for the vehicle. This is why it is so important for a passenger to only travel with a driver he or she trusts to adhere to Florida traffic laws and safety regulations. Negligent or reckless driving is often the cause of a fatal auto accident.

A tragedy occurred on a recent Monday in the wee hours after midnight. A 20-year-old man was driving on I-75 in Lee County with a female passenger in the vehicle.  No information regarding her age or identity was provided.

The driver was heading south on the road when his vehicle apparently veered off and onto a grass shoulder on the west side of the highway. The vehicle rolled over, causing both occupants to be ejected. Rescue workers transported the driver to an area hospital for urgent care. Sadly, the passenger did not survive her injuries.

Including this fatal auto accident, there have been 78 other fatal collisions in the same Florida county to date this year. If driver negligence is a causal factor in a collision that resulted in fatal injuries to another person, an immediate family member of the deceased victim may file a wrongful death claim in the state’s civil justice system. Compensation awarded by the court in such cases, which must be based upon proof of negligence, often helps grieving families cover funeral expenses, medical bills and other debt associated with such tragedies.
