4 things to tell your lawyer after a car wreck

Motor vehicle accidents on Florida roadways are even more common than you think. In fact, in 2017, there were more than 400,000 car crashes in the Sunshine State. That averages out to nearly 2,000 automobile accidents every single day in Florida.

Following a collision, you may feel a variety of emotions. You may also have an injury, property damage or both. To ensure you receive fair compensation, you may need legal help. Here are four things you should tell your lawyer after a car wreck:

1. An honest description of the accident

For an attorney to represent you effectively, he or she must understand exactly how the motor vehicle accident unfolded. Because most of what you tell your lawyer is confidential, you should not hold back. Instead, give your attorney an honest description of the accident in your initial consultation. If you are unsure about certain aspects, say so. Also, do not change facts or omit details to make yourself look better. Remember that the other party and their attorney are having a similar conversation.

2. A description of your injuries and the impact on your life

When you are in pain, you may not feel like talking about the details. Nonetheless, your attorney needs to know about your injuries. What hurts and what level is the pain? What is the treatment plan and the prognosis for recovery? Are you following the doctor's orders? Does the injury affect your sleep, or your work, or your relationships? Keeping a journal can help you recall important details that will benefit your legal case.

Try to be as forthcoming with your lawyer as possible, including prior injuries or pre-existing medical conditions. If you can, provide a copy of your medical file and other relevant records.

3. A comprehensive account of your relevant past

Your driving record, criminal background and other past records may not present you in the best light. Still, an opposing attorney or insurance company may use your prior behaviors against you. Even though it can be embarrassing to talk about uncomfortable subjects, it is better for your lawyer to hear about your past as soon as possible, rather than being surprised during litigation.

4. A listing of your concerns

Even though motor vehicle collisions occur every day, you may have never been in the middle of one. As such, you may have a variety of questions and concerns you need your attorney to address. How does the legal process work? What is the timeline? Who pays the medical providers while your personal injury case is pending? Why is the insurance company dragging its feet? Do not be shy. Rather, tell your lawyer what bothers you.

Talking to a lawyer about an automobile accident may seem difficult. Nonetheless, if you want to receive effective representation, you must have certain conversations.
