Teen driver-involved crashes increase during “100 Deadliest Days”

While there are always going to be dangers you face when traveling Florida’s highways, you may find that your chances of getting involved in a car crash with a teenage driver spike substantially during a particular part of the year. At Rosenthal, Levy, Simon & Riles, we recognize that summer’s “100 Deadliest Days” are a dangerous time to be on the road, and we have helped many people who lost loved ones or suffered injuries in car wrecks involving teenage drivers seek recourse.

According to AAA, summer’s 100 Deadliest Days start on Memorial Day and end on Labor Day, which is a time in which many teenagers are out of school for the summer and traveling the streets and highways. Your chances of involvement in a car crash with a teenage driver increase during this span, and this is due to several different factors.

In some cases, teenage drivers find themselves responsible for car crashes because they take dangerous risks behind the wheel, such as drinking and driving, texting and driving or driving distracted in another manner. In other cases, teenage drivers simply lack the experience and knowledge necessary to safely navigate the roads and avoid crashes that more experienced drivers potentially could.

Research shows that speed and nighttime driving are also frequent factors in fatal crashes involving teenage drivers that occur within summer’s 100 Deadliest Days span. Nighttime car crash rates for incidents involving teen drivers rose 22% during 2016’s 100 Deadliest Day period, while speed contributed to 29% of that year’s teen driver-involved road fatalities.
