Avoid a fatal crash on Florida roadways

Vacation season means sun and fun for many, but it also means roads will be even busier than usual. As we get closer and closer to summer, we wish to remind everyone to stay safe on Florida’s roadways.

According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Florida consistently appears near the top of traffic fatality lists for the nation. Keep reading for safe driving tips and information for families who have lost someone they love in a fatal accident.

Stay safe on Florida roadways

Safe driving tips can sometimes feel like a broken record, but the basics can mean the difference between a fender bender and a fatal accident. You can make a difference in roadway safety if you:

  • Stick to the speed limit
  • Don't drink and drive
  • Ensure your tires and brakes are in good condition
  • Wear your seat belt and encourage passengers to do the same

One of the biggest contributors to Florida’s high motor vehicle fatality rate is drunk driving. In March 2018, Florida roadways saw more than 15 crashes a day involving drivers who had been drinking.

Recovery for families of those killed in motor vehicle accidents

No amount of money can bring back a loved one who dies in a car crash, nor can it take away the pain of their family’s loss. But, when a loved one dies because of someone else’s negligence or misconduct on the road, the legal system can offer some relief. Who can file a wrongful death claim after a fatal accident depends on the types of family members the deceased leaves behind.

As you head out on the road this spring, keep in mind that risky driving has consequences. But even small changes to our driving can help make Florida a safer place to drive.
