How safe are Florida roads?

Getting behind the wheel is a risk in any town in every state in the nation. However, some Florida roadways rank higher than average for their dangerous nature, putting drivers at an elevated risk for a serious injury due to a motor vehicle accident.

With many major interstate freeways running through the state, Florida handles a lot of traffic. That includes long-haul semi trucks that can cause even more devastating accidents than an average passenger vehicle. So, just how safe are Florida's roads at handling all the vehicles using them?

Florida has the country's deadliest highway

U.S. Highway 1 in Florida has the dubious honor of being the highway with the most fatalities not only in the state, but in the entire nation. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said injuries were present in 42 percent - nearly half - of all the state's traffic crashes in 2016. In addition to the dangerous conditions on U.S. 1, Florida is also home to the deadliest stretch of I-95, US 192 and I-4, which had previously been named the deadliest highway in the U.S. Those four highways combine to make driving in Florida a daunting experience for many.

Florida road safety programs

The Florida Department of Transportation has various safety programs in place with the goal of improving driver safety on the state's roads. One program aimed at reducing distracted driving is the state's "Safe Phone Zones." Motorists can utilize these areas on the state's freeways to safely make phone calls, rather than taking the risk of using the phone while driving. There are also awareness campaigns, such as Child Safety Awareness Month, that remind drivers to practice safe habits behind the wheel, including always using a seatbelt.

Florida roads suffer a relatively high number of traffic crashes, and the state ranks high on several studies of the most dangerous states in which to drive. As a Florida driver, make sure you avoid distracted driving and observe general safety guidelines to reduce the risk of suffering serious injury in a motor vehicle accident.
