When a car wreck results in a brain injury

As a Florida driver, you know that traffic keeps getting worse and other drivers seem to be getting more aggressive and/or more distracted. This deadly combination makes it likely that sooner or later, one of these negligent drivers will hit your vehicle. When that happens, the results could be catastrophic, especially if you receive a traumatic brain injury as a result of the accident.

By definition, a traumatic brain injury is a blow to your head that injures your brain to such an extent that it becomes dysfunctional. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 286,000 people receive such an injury each year due to car crashes. Crash-related TBIs usually happen in one of the three following ways:

  1. You hit your head on something inside your car, such as your windshield, steering wheel, etc.
  2. Something penetrates your skull, such as flying debris or glass.
  3. The impact gives you a whiplash injury whereby your head and neck jerk sharply forward and backward, causing your brain to violently hit the inside of your skull.

TBI symptoms

Any head injury, even a seemingly minor one, can result in a TBI. However, your symptoms may or may not appear immediately. Therefore, be on the lookout for any of the following symptoms in the hours, days and weeks after your accident:

  • Vision blurring or abnormal light sensitivity
  • Ringing in your ears or abnormal sound sensitivity
  • Nausea, vomiting or headaches
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Feeling confused or disoriented
  • Abnormal mood swings or feelings of depression or anxiety

Some TBI victims also develop personality changes such as intermittent bouts of irritability, anger, aggressiveness or even combativeness.

TBI costs

No two TBIs are exactly the same. Virtually all, however, entail medical costs that can quickly escalate. Depending on which part of your brain you injure and the severity of that injury, you could face any or all of the following costs: testing, surgery, physical and occupational therapy, rehabilitation, prescription medications and in-home or nursing home care.

Your TBI also could leave you with a disability that makes it impossible for you to work for a substantial period of time, or possibly ever again. Given the extraordinary costs associated with most TBIs, you would do well to consider filing a personal injury lawsuit against the negligent driver who caused your pain, suffering and enormous medical bills.
